In either case the computer will only ship to The Bookstore for the U of M School of Education preparation. | The TRC Department has a very talented (and FRIENDLY) but small staff. In order to provide the highest level of support to our students, faculty, and staff the TRC Department has implemented a few important policies. Please be aware of these when you request laptop support. |
BUNDLED LAPTOPS

- Laptops running the recommended operating system. (For laptops with a pre-Windows XP operating system, the TRC Department can attempt to recover data, but can provide no other services.)
- Installation of recommended software. Students MUST present original software disks or proof of license before the TRC staff can install software.

SUPPORTED LAPTOPS
WHY BUY A SUPPORTED LAPTOP?
You will use your laptop extensively both in and out of class. The supported models are configured to provide the features School of Education students need most. You will find the laptops we support below. We strongly encourage UM School of Education students to purchase the laptop computers we support.
1.
We offer full in-house, factory-authorized, next-day hardware warranty service and software support on Dell supported models. If your computer breaks we will be able to fix it in the shortest time possible.
2. We do not provide any warranty or support services for non-supported laptops. If your computer breaks, you will have to take it to a local computer repair shop or send it to an authorized service center. The School of Education School has laptops to loan while yours is being repaired.
Additionally, we strongly encourage you to purchase your Dell laptop from the UM Bookstore so that you can take advantage of the pre-configured packages they offer School of Education students that include in-house warranty service. If you want to purchase a non-supported model or a supported model from another source, you must make sure your computer strictly meets the Minimum Laptop Specifications , especially regarding the warranty. We cannot provide warranty service on computers that do not meet these minimum specifications. Again, we do not provide any service or support on non-supported laptops even if they meet the Minimum Laptop Recommendations.

Minimum Laptop Specifications
Although we strongly encourage you to purchase one of the supported laptops, if you choose not to, you should make sure your computer meets at least these hardware and software specifications. Be aware that we will not service non-supported models, even if they meet these specifications.
Hardware
- 2 GB of RAM.
- Ethernet port, 10/100, RJ45 jack. This is required for network access in the School of Education and for DSL connections at home.
- Wireless card (built-in wireless adapter). Wireless access is available on the first and second floor of the School of Education building.
- DVD/DVD-RW Drive. Effective backup procedures that will safeguard your School of Education school documents require the capacity to write to non-volatile media such as CDs or DVDs . Users are now storing unusually large amounts of data which is why we recommend a drive that will burn DVDs. DVDs offer about six times the storage capacity of a CD. (Floppy drives are NOT recommended. Floppy disks are an inherently unreliable medium.)
- Modem. A modem is necessary only if you want telephone dial-up Internet access.
Software
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional Only (NOT Home or Media Center Edition). XP Pro is recommended because older operating systems may not be supported by TRC technical staff. If you choose to purchase Microsoft Windows Vista, which does not work with some software or with our wireless access, we recommend downgrading to XP Pro.
**APPLE - Mac OS X v10.5.4 Leopard
- Anti-virus software. You MUST install Symantec Anti-Virus software before you connect your laptop to any University network. The University has a site license for Symantec Anti-Virus software so it is available at no charge to all students. Do NOT purchase it with your computer. Please contact the TRC 243-2143 for details, initial download, set up and automatic virus definition updates via the UM School of Education anti-virus server. If you purchase a recommended laptop through this web site, Symantec Anti-Virus software will be installed on and configured on your computer when you receive it.
- Word processing software. UM School of Education students will need Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 . Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 is available from the UM Bookstore for approximately $80 (student discount, with your Griz card). The School of Education TRC technical staff will install this software for you if you wish.
Warranty
You should purchase a 3- or 4-year no-fault, accidental-damage, next-day warranty. However, even with a warranty, we cannot service non-supported models, and you will have to take your computer to a local computer repair shop or send it to an authorized service center.
